What is International Indigenous Studies?

Indigenous peoples are becoming more prominent players on the Canadian and world stages.  Many sectors of the Canadian economy are recongizing and adjusting to the demands and aspirations of Indigenous peoples in Canada and abroad.  These sectors include:

  • Fishing
  • Forestry
  • Oil and gas
  • Banking
  • Tourism
  • Mass media
  • The arts
  • Public administration

The program increases understanding, awareness of and respect for Indigenous and non-Indigenous knowledge, realities, perspectives, experience, and cultures from around the world.  There is a focus on such aspects of Indigenous peoples' relationship with:

  • Arts
  • Culture
  • Ecologies
  • Economies
  • Histories
  • Identities
  • Knowledge/ways of knowing
  • Languages
  • Literature
  • Music
  • Community
  • Political dynamics

Students have the opportunity to engage in mutually beneficial partnerships with Indigenous communities and post-secondary institutions and learn to incorporate respectfully Indigenous peoples' experiential epistemologies, especially traditional Indigenous spirituality and languages.

Topics are contextualized in Canada and around the world, often in an explicitly comparative perspective.

Design and structure of the program sets out to attract both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students.  The program is also designed to appeal to prospective students who are enrolled in Indigenous post-secondary institutions in Alberta and who may wish to complete their degree at the University of Calgary.

Possible Careers:

The program prepares graduates for work in diverse private sector or public sector roles.  For example:

  • Banking
  • Insurance
